Dedicated Server

A dedicated server is a single computer in a network reserved for serving the needs solely of that network. In business terms this means the sever is committed to the single use of a particular business or purpose.

For example, a company XYZ has a dedicated sever for their website. So their sever dedicates it resources solely to their website. Nothing else is hosted on that sever and the sever does serve any thing else.

Why is this useful? – Well because dedicated severs are normally better equipped and more capable of dealing with high-traffic and resource intensive website, or hosting a high-traffic and resource intensive application. Varying business needs will dictate whether a dedicated sever is needed or not.

Note, as we have previously mention in our Sever section, that not all servers are dedicated. In some cases, it is possible for a computer to act as a server and while still performing other functions as well.

A dedicated server is typically a rented service. The web hosting company or supplier with rent the server, software and an internet connection to the user/business.

This is not to say there aren’t larger companies that manage and supply their own dedicated severs for their own needs.
